Barrett, who made the headlines earlier this month when he scored for the Republic of Ireland on his full international debut, has already had loan spells at Bristol Rovers, Crewe and most recently Colchester where he was a big hit.

The U's had been hoping to take Barrett back on loan, but a move to the First Division proved a more attractive option than a return to Division Two.
