Having reported the misfortune of Graham Stack in Belgium a couple of weeks ago, when he was on the receiving end of 7 goals in 2 successive matches, it gives me great pleasure to update you on the progress of young Arsenal keeper Graham Stack.
Beveren have won their last 2 matches, both 2-1, and in large part due to the heroics of our Graham.
Beveren fan Tom De Keersmaeker writes from Belgium,
"...against Brugge and Anderlecht [the 7 goal losses], the defence was bad. If not for 'Stacky' it would have been 10-0!! He's a good keeper and I hope Arsenal does not need him.... so we can have him for a longer time."
"The last 2 weeks Beveren has won 2-1 against Sint-Truiden (second place in Belgium) and by the same score against Lokeren (third place). In the last match Stacky was the best player on the pitch. We hope Stacky can stay here for a long time. If you get him back, make him number one!! HE'S GOOD."
Filip Pauwels wrote saying much the same, and adding that Stack made 6 good saves against Lokeren. So it doesn't sound like it's
the Beveren defence that's getting better. Graham's getting plenty of useful practice still, and if hadn't been for him Beveren could have faced another 7-1 defeat!
Stack also played the full 90 minutes for the Republic's U21 team last Tuesday when they lost 2-0 in Scotland. Apparently he couldn't do anything about the goals.
Rupe adds...
Steffan Jarman has found some excellent quotes from after the
Lokeren game. Ivory Coast striker Kaiper (who scored the injury time winner) said "We won thanks to God and Stacky". God was unavailabel for interview, but Stack said, "My last game [at Beveren] will be against Anderlecht at the end of May. This will be a very emotional game for me. Next season I hope to make the step up to the Arsenal squad. Seaman is getting older and Shaaban has suffered a double fracture to his leg. The latter's replacement [Willy Warmuz] will be gone by the end of the season, so who knows...?"
