It's official Arsenal are the Champions of Europe - well the Ladies are following a 0-0 draw earlier today against fancied Swedish champions Umea at Borehamwood in the second leg of the Ladies Uefa Cup Final. Over 3 thousand supporters packed into tiny Meadow Park to see the Ladies get the draw required following Alex Scott's 93rd minute winning goal last week in the first leg.
Brave defending with a little bit of help from the post, the crossbar and goalkeeper Emma Byrne's face kept Umea at bay with their strikeforce of Marta (The Brazilian recently voted by FIFA the number one womans player in the world) and Hannah Ljunberg (no relation to Freddie) failing to put the ball into the back of the net. Our Ladies also had chances at the other end with Lianne Sanderson, Julie Fleeting and captain Jayne Ludlow coming close but eventually after five minutes of injury time the referee blew the whistle and the celebrations and cup presentation began.
You can still see our trophy winning Ladies this season with a 7:45pm kickoff against Chelsea at Borehamwood this Wednesday, the Ladies FA Cup Final against Charlton at Nottingham Forest on Bank Holiday Monday May 7th (1pm kickoff) and Everton at Borehamwood on May 9th with a 7:45pm kickoff. There's also a game against Leeds at Borehamwood to be scheduled in as well.
