Arsenal lucky that a stroll was enough by Rupe

Watford (1) 2 - 4 (2) Arsenal
Vicarage Rd, Saturday 5th January 2002
FA Cup 3rd round

Most reports will probably talk about how easy this was for Arsenal, how they never needed to get into top gear to beat an opposition who, from the manager to the fans, didn;t seem to believe they could compete with us.

But in truth it was one of those games in which Arsenal have a bad habit of failing to makie their dominance tell. We scored 4 but it should have been 8 or more. They scored 2 but could have had a couple more if they'd gone for it a bit more.

The game seemed over after 9 minutes. On 7 Kanu put Henry clear in the box (looking mightily close to offside) and Thierry made no mistake with the one-on-one. And 2 minutes later the 2 strikers combined brilliantly to set Ljungberg up for the second.

But Gifton Noel Williams got one back for the home side shortly afterwards, and Arsenal failed to add any more goals before halftime. Kanu missed a sitter through over-elaboration and Van Bronckhorst got the ball in the net just before the break only to have it ruled out because of handball.

Kanu made amends (and capped a good display overall) by bagging the third after he fed Vieira and then met the skipper's cross with a fine downwards header into the bottom corner. And the subs Bergkamp and Wiltord combined for a 4th on the break 5 minutes from time, Dennis doing well to poke it home after a dodgy first touch.

Marcus Gayle got another for Watford in injury time, an excellent shot from a narrow angle.

Shock of the round so far: West Brom winning at Sunderland.
