Arsenal 2 (0) Parlour 70, Ljungberg 80
Chelsea 0 (0)
FA Cup final, Millennium Stadium, CardiffScreamers from Ray Parlour and Fredrik Ljungberg gave Arsenal the first trophy in four years, as Arsenal beat Chelsea to lift the FA Cup. The match was a tense affair, with both teams in the driving seat at various stages. The biggest chances in an evenly played first half were headers from Dennis Bergkamp and Lauren. Chelsea's long range efforts hardly troubled David Seaman. In the second half, the Arsenal keeper had to use the palm of his hand to tip over a Chelsea shot, but wasn't tested often. Instead, the action came at the other end, and both the Arsenal goals came on counter attacks. Parlour received the ball in the middle of the park, and ran up against the Chelsea defence. Smart runs by Ljungberg, Thierry Henry and Sylvain Wiltord tied up the defenders, so Parlour could have a crack from 25 yards. Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini touched the ball, but couldn't stop it entering the top right hand corner. The second goal reminded some of us of Marc Overmars. Ljungberg got the ball from substitute Edu and ran through the defence. Where Overmars used pace, Ljungberg used his physique to wrestle away the last man, before curling the ball just inside the far post. The FA Cup itself was lifted by Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira together: a sign of times to come? The Arsenal line-up: Seaman; Lauren, Campbell, Adams, Cole; Wiltord (Keown 90), Parlour, Vieira, Ljungberg; Bergkamp (Edu 70), Henry (Kanu 80). Subs not used: Dixon, Wright.
