A couple of surprises in the Arsenal team, but it's still pretty strong. The defence is almost full-strength, with Kolo Toure rested to the bench but Keown returning from injury. Lauren is back too.
The surprise in midfield is Edu on the left in place of Pires. Gilberto is back from the flu partner the skipper in the middle.
Up front, both Bergkamp and Wiltord are injured, and Aliadiere was taken ill overnight. So it's Kanu who plays with Henry, and there is no substitute striker on the bench. The options, should they be required, are to push Freddie and/or Pires up. Toure probably makes a decent striker too.
Apparently the plan had been for Aliadiere to start the game with Kanu (or maybe Henry?) on the bench. David Bentley had to be brought up from London at late notice to make up the numbers.
Lehmann
Lauren Campbell Keown Cole
Ljungberg Vieira Gilberto Edu
Henry Kanu
subs: Parlour Pires & Toure for Ljungberg Edu & Kanu (all on 80)
Shaaban, Bentley not used
[Add Rupe]
Arsene Wenger confirmed after the match that Kanu was going to start along with Aliadiere until the latter fell ill. Henry ended up scoring 1, creating 2, and with a fully-deserved man-of-the-match award. See full report |
