Sheffield United will be Arsenal's opposition in the FA Cup 5th round next Saturday, following today's replay win over West Ham at Bramall Lane.
Teddy Sheringham was temporarily the Irons' hero, when his second half penalty cancelled out the Blades' opener. The home side's captain was sent off in the incident which caused the spot kick, but you'd hardly have known they were short-staffed for the remainder of the match, and the 10 man Sheffield United had more chances in extra time. When it went to penalties, there were quite a few woeful ones. Sheringham got the ball rolling when his opening effort for West Ham was saved.
Arsenal last met Sheffield United in the 2003 semi-final, when one scrappy goal and wonder-save from the soon-departing David Seaman took us through at Old Trafford. Before that there was the notorious 5th round win when Steve Bruce threw his dummy out of the pram and Arsenal offered a rematch, both games ending 2-1 to Arsenal.
Saturday's tie at Highbury kicks off at 12.30, and is being shown live on BBC1. It'll be interesting to see how strong a side Wenger puts out. He'll be wanting to win this cup very much, but the squad have to fly to Germany soon after for the Bayern Munich game 3 days later. Bergkamp will presumably be facing United. |
