Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said last night that he was
"astonished" that Manchester United were planning to accept the FA's offer to skip the FA Cup for a season.
United have to feather their own nest, but I like to think Arsenal would always honour the trophies they win by defending
them... Going halfway round the world, in the middle of our
domestic season,... serves no worthwhile purpose."
"Frankly, I find the whole thing a nonsense."
In contrast, vice-chairman David Dein was said to have approved of
the FA's offer when sitting on the decisive executive, but of course he
may not have been expecting them to accept it.
It was also revealed that the FA only dropped the idea of easing
United's "fixture burden" by making the Charity Shield count as a
league match, when it became clear that Arsenal would have none of it.
