There has been speculation that the all-London FA Cup semi-final
betwen Arsenal and Tottenham will be played away from the capital.
With Wembley out of action, and Stamford Bridge
being a dump (or "undergoing a major revamp" as they prefer to say), it may not be possible to accommodate all the fans
in a London stadium. (Ken Bates has now dismissed the possibility
of using Stamford Bridge. They'd love to, he says, but the
builders need that weekend to clean up.)
If it does go outside London, Villa Park is the most likely
venue. It'd make for a travel nightmare, with rival hordes making the exact
same journeys to and from Birmingham.
Hopefully the FA will announce something soon. The Police are understandably keen to keep the game in London, but after Stamford Bridge the options are limited in numbers. According to West Ham, Tottenham have apparently already made enquiries about
holding the game at the Boleyn Ground, which would at least be easy to get to. Selhurst Park is however slightly larger.
Ground capacities (according to the football ground guide) are:
West Ham 26052
Chelsea 35436 (not sure how the rebuilding affects this figure)
Villa 39372
and while we're at it, some other London grounds...
Crystal Palace 26400
Charlton 20043
Twickenham (75000) has been suggested by some but is not an option because NIMBY/Council objections prevent football being played there.
And finally, Peter Manley wrote to suggest a perfect solution:
an easy train ride from London, huge (and spectacular) stadium,
nice town to visit.... only perhaps Tottenham'd feel that the Stade de France would be too much like a home game for the Arsenal.
