We've had a few suggestions from ArseWeb readers, regarding
alternative venues for the FA Cup semi-final on April 8th.
The most appealing, although sadly impractical, was the idea of
staging at at the Stade de France.
Some people suggested that our semi should be at Villa Park,
just a bit closer to London which would make all the difference
on that Sunday morning. There are several possibilities for
the Liverpool-Wycombe game besides the Villa venue.
My personal choice was to extend half-time to a couple of hours,
enabling one half of the match to be played at Highbury and the other at White Hart Lane. No-one else seems to think this is practical, for some reason :)
But the most common suggestion was to toss a coin for it. Play it
at either Highbury or White Hart Lane. You could make the home team use the away team facilities (dressing room, bench, etc)
to make it less like a home game for them. For similar reasons, you could give the away fans the home end.
Well, we have it on very good authority that this idea was
seriously mooted. On Monday morning George Graham was offered
the toss of a coin by none other than the FA's David Davies.
George refused.
We can only presume that the offer was also made to Arsenal,
but we have no information on what their response was.
At the end of the day, George is probably right. At least
with a truly neutral venue, the losers won't be left
wondering what might have been if they'd insisted on not
playing the game at Highbury.
