'Allez Gilles' talks rarely to the press and therefore his interviews are worth a reading. He told Canal+ monthly magazine his desire to play in England arose when Monaco played Newcastle a few years back : "I loved the enthusiastic and intense atmosphere (...) and did not hesitate when AW asked me to join him at Arsenal.
At the beginning, it' s difficult to adapt to England. One has difficulties with the language, the state of mind and the climate. Once these reserves are overcomed one appreciates the country. Everything is different here, biggest change is the way to approach matches. Even in London, I' ve found out a parochialism. Attachment and fidelity to the club are genuine and the expression "to play football" has kept its original meaning.
The coach not only brought in talented players but is also in search for players likely to settle in our style of play : mobile, aggressive defenders and midfielders, fast, technical and powerful forwards. We (French Gooners) get on well together and with the English too. I like for instance the humour of Ray Parlour who is a nice chap.
Arsenal is a team who has character. But we often wait to be in a delicate situation to react. In the Premier League we are sure of our strength. It is necessary to stop being satisfied to reach the CL quarter-finals even if appearing regularly in the top 8 European clubs proves our consistency at high level. If we manage to get through to the semis, we' ll have passed a turning point which perhaps unconsciously blocks us. Everything may happen afterwards" |
