An 89th minute penalty by Arsenal's Lauren put Cameroon in the Olympic soccer final, and a guaranteed silver medal.
The game was goalless until the final ten minutes, when a shocking attempt at a clearance let a Chilean spring the Indomitable Lions' offside trap. The striker blasts the ball goalwards - it rebounds off the keeper, rebounds back off the chasing defender, and into the net. Ouch.
Cameroon equalised a few minutes later, with Mboma knocking one in from close range after a goalmouth scramble situation. Then on 88 minutes, Cameroon won a rather (ahem) debatable penalty. And presumably ignorant of Arsenal's recent inability to score from the spot - up goes Lauren. Two-one.
And so ends any hope of Lauren being back in time for the ManU game at the weekend. Cameroon's opponents in the final will be Spain, who beat the Americans 3-1.
The final is on Saturday afternoon in Sydney, live TV coverage in the UK on BBC1, starting at 1.50am Saturday morning (according to
BBC Olympic schedule - but be careful as timings may vary)
