In the absence of Tony Adams and, ahem, David Beckham,
our own Martin Keown has been named England captain
for Wednesday's crucial match in Finland.
Stand-in fall-guy Howard Wilkinson told Martin on the plane to
Helsinki tonight. He said afterwards,
"I think the aeroplane gained extra
altitude after I told Martin! I took things into
consideration like there being a number of club
captains already in the team and that David
Seaman had already led England."
"But Martin Keown has really established
himself now in everyone's eyes and his
qualities are very similar to Stuart Pearce. He
has got the qualities we need, that every team
needs particularly at times like this."
Quiet right too. And hopefully a good captain's performance
will see Martin established as Tony's deputy in the future.
See BBC Sport for more, including
Keown quotes about the captaincy and Keegan's departure. He admits that the players have lost "a special friend" but says that morale is picking up. |
