Good news for Arsenal, but sad for Kanu: he's been
dropped by Nigeria for their African Nations Cup qualifier against Zambia next month.
There had been some talk about punishing Kanu in just this way, for not going to the Olympics. But coach Jo Bonfrere had made it
clear that he didn't see this as an option, and that Kanu was a key part of his plans for Nations Cup and World Cup qualification.
Last week Bonfrere announced his squad for Zambia, including the Arsenal man. Now the Nigerian FA have announced a "revised" squad,
with 8 players dropped. They did say that this was for "financial
reasons", but given Kanu's status it seems obvious that he'd not
normally be one of the ones they'd drop for that reason.
Meanwhile Bonfrere has reportedly threatened to report the NFA
to FIFA over delays in paying his salary. Maybe they'll drop him too. Seems quite likely actually. Not only have they dropped players he would have wanted, they've called up Finidi George
who Bonfrere recently said wasn't up to it.
One things for sure: you can't be sure of anything
where the NFA is concerned.
