France romped to an easy victory in their opening game in the FIFA Confederations Cup, beating joint hosts South Korea 5-0 in Seoul.
Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires were in the starting line-up for Les Bleus (playing in white), along with some bloke called Anelka. Sylvain Wiltord began on the bench.
The French went one-up on eight minutes, thanks to Lyon striker Steve Marlet - his first international goal, on his second international appearance. And it was our own Monsieur Vieira who made it two on 19 mins: with a goal described as 'mon-u-ment-ale' by Football365's French edition - a 25-yard scorcher into the roof of the net, as a Pires free-kick came back off the wall.
There's some doubt on the third goal, bundled in by a combination of Anelka and Marlet. (Arseweb is inclined to give it to Marlet, for some reason.) And the half-time lead should have been even greater - Dugarry failed to convert a 21st minute penalty.
Perhaps predictably, the game lost much of its momentum after the break. But Sylvain Wiltord and Youri Djorkaeff came on midway through the second half, and brought a bit more bite to the French attack. A fourth goal came on 79 minutes, through Djorkaeff... and in injury time, Sylvain Wiltord banged in a fifth - getting on the end of a Carriere through ball, rounding the keeper and slotting it home.
Speaking afterwards, Vieira said: "I'm very proud of my goal. It's maybe not the absolute best I've ever scored, but it made me very happy." |
