As expected, FIFA have announced that the squads for the Australia-France friendly will remain as they are. Arsenal
will have to release 4 players to travel to the match, or
face displiplinary action from FIFA.
There was talk of the possibility that FIFA would restrict the
number of friendlies which an international association can call players up for (se here), but instead they have confirmed that the rules stand as
before.
This means that, as a side with no qualifying competition
to play in this year, France are entitled to 8 friendly call-ups in 2001. They have not used this number (the Confederations Cup
matches were competitive, not friendlies), and so are perfectly within their rights to call up who they want.
Now, do Arsenal have any other tricks up their sleeves?
Wenger did say on telly the other night that he did not think 4 Arsenal players would be travelling to Australia for the match...
