If anyone was in any doubt about the importance of this game,
the feeling obviously hadn't gotten through to many of the players.
Australia took the lead just before the break when France's defence left Rangers defender Craig Moore unmarked at a corner, and he made no mistake with the header.
Shortly after the break Trezeguet levelled it, thanks largely to
Robert Pires. The Aresnal man received the ball on the left wing and advanced towards the box. Just as you were wondering what side Bob was going to skin him on, he played a square ball to Dugarry and slipped past the defender to pick up the return ball and head towards the near post. The Juve man was in the right place and had no problem tapping Bob's cross in.
There were several player confrontations during the "friendly",
including one where Pires might have been punished for reacting,
but wasn't the worst offender.
The match was particularly marred by a bad injury to Dugarry
just before the hour. Australia
defender Kevin Muscat (and Wolves is it?) launched himself at
Dugarry and caught the the French player's leg between his knees. Dugarry will be out for a number of months with badly
stretched ligaments. It was a nasty foul, but the extent of the injury unfortunate, as the weight of the players came down on their
tangled legs.
Vieira and Pires played the whole game, with Wiltord coming on for
Dugarry. |
