Mali latest: Kanu talks of France by Rupe

Nigeria's second game in the African Nations Cup ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw with the host nation Mali. Nigeria still top their group with 4 points, but the other teams in their group, Liberia and Algeria, play their second game tonight, the Confederation of African Football having stepped in to stop a pay dispute causing a boycott by the Liberian team. Nigeria are still favourites to go through.

Kanu played the full game this time. There were very few chances at either end.

Cameroon face the relatively highly fancied Ivory Coast inb their second match this evening. See preview.

In interviews, Kanu is reported to have said that he doesn't want "to sit on the bench all season", and that he's glad clubs have expressed an interest because "it shows that people appreciate what I can do." It seems that, having talked to his mates in the Arsenal side, France is holding an attraction for him.

Lyon reported to have said an interest. Kanu says, "I don't know about Lyon, but there are plenty of good sides in France who I could play for."

It wouldn't be at all surprising if Kanu left. After all, he must know that his limited chances this season would have been much fewer if Jeffers had been fit. And so far his form has not been such as to give him any confidence of his place in the pecking order in the future.

Meanwhile, Spanish side Alaves have sacked Kanu's brother Christopher. The defender, on loan from Ajax, did not return to Spain from Nigeria, after having been left out of the Nations Cup squad. He claims he was ill and couldn't get through to Alaves to tell them, but it looks like he's on his way back to Amsterdam. See OneFootball.com
