U21s: Upson out, Pennant off by Rupe

this is story 267 of 368 in this topic to date
The injury which saw Matthew Upson leave the pitch on Sunday has also forced him to withdraw from David Platt's England U21 side, due to play Slovenia tomorrow afternoon. Upson had to leave the pitch after a hard tackle from Toffees debutant Lee Carsley. We're yet to hear any specific details of his injury so it's hard to say if this is going to keep him out for any length of time. Hopefully his international withdrawal is just precautionary. The depleted defence did well on Sunday but we've got tougher games coming up, and it'd be best not to have to count on Adams till he's proved his fitness in a proper match. (So much for that... Arsenal confirm that, liek Keown, Upson has a fracture of his (right) fibula. Upson's is worse, he's expected to be out for 6 weeks)

Another Gunner in Platty's side, Jermaine Pennant, could well play. But his warm-up for it was marred by a sending off in Watford's win over Grimsby. He reacted to a bad challenge by Tony Gallimore and appeared to grab him by the neck. The ravenous hacks will be doing their best to add this to the tally of red cards Arsenal have had since Arsene Wenger arrived.

Rupe adds...
Mark Lankester writes with some details...

"...having been hacked down by the Grimsby left back, Jermaine was then stamped on, by the same player! Only then did he react. Jermaine was well out of order for grabbing the full back by the throat, however having made the guy look silly all game it was probably the only way Grimsby were going to stop him. After he was sent off I lost interest, but prior to that he was the best player on the park by a country mile!"
