Arsenal striker Kanu has been handed the captaincy of
the Nigeria squad for the World Cup finals, and will lead them out against England Sweden and Argentina. Kanu was previously captain of the side when they won the 1996 Olympiccompetition, before his health problems forced an absence.
He says, "I'm delighted by the news.
It is my aim to make a great impression at the World Cup as my contract at Arsenal will soon expire and I need to play well if I am to get an improved offer."
The papers will no doubt take this as evidence that he's
looking for a move, but on the face of it he's talking about
how much Arsenal might pay him.
Still, given the lack of games he's getting behind Wiltord Henry and the revitalised Bergkamp, perhaps it's not unlikely. Especially if Jeffers manages to stay fit for a few game sin a row.
Kanu will be hoping for a bit more action in the next 3 games,
now that Henry is suspended.
