England and Sweden drew 1-1 in their World Cup opening game, with four Arsenal players on the pitch. Fredrik Ljungberg played through the pain barrier for Sweden, while David Seaman, Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole started for England. Campbell scored his first (allowed) England goal after 24 minutes, heading in a David Beckham corner. Sweden equalised in the second half through Everton's Niclas Alexandersson, after Ljungberg had been moved from his left midfield position and into the middle of the Swedish 4-4-2 diamond formation. After a quiet first half, Freddie was a key player in the second half. Seaman had no chance to save Sweden's goal, and was reliable throughout the game. Cole made several attacking runs, and came close with two long range shots. Campbell was solid at the back, and a threat on set pieces. In the other game in the opening group, Argentina beat Nigeria 1-0. Kanu went off injured early in the second half, but there are conflicting reports as to what kind of injury forced him off the field. The Nigeria coach claims Kanu was elbowed in his side and was badly bruised. Other reports suggest the Arsenal forward twisted his left knee early in the game, and limped through most of the first half. |
