Five Arsenal players featured prominently in yesterday's group game in the finals of the European under-19 championships in Norway. England and Germany played out a dramatic 3-3 draw, with the Germans coming back from 3-1 down to score twice in 3 minutes of injury time.
Moritz Volz, the German captain, playing an anchor role in midfield, opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, breaking through a square English defence to slot cooly past the keeper.
Justin Hoyte and Ryan Garry played in the English defence in the right and left back positions.
England equalised 5 minutes later with a goal brilliantly made by Jermaine Pennant. He knocked a superb first time volley through the German defence for Crewe's Dean Ashton to run onto and score through the German keeper's legs. England then went ahead 15 minutes before half-time with a goal made at Highbury. Pennant again got away down the right and clipped a low ball across the face of goal. Jerome Thomas was running in at the far post and finished brilliantly, hitting the ball high just inside the near post with his right foot.
England then went 3-1 ahead half an hour into the second half when Chelsea's Cole slotted the loose ball into an empty net after the German keeper had come out of his area. Volz, Thomas and Hoyte had all been substituted by the time Germany produced their late comeback.
The undoubted man of the match though was Jermaine Pennant with a scintillating display of skill and trickery at high pace.
England's next match is on Wednesday against Belgium.
