Arsenal's Nigerian striker could end up being banned for
a while by FIFA, having failed to turn up for international duty against Angola last week.
But this is not a classic "club vs country" situation, because
Kanu was released and did go to Africa. The Nigerian FA see
the fact that he went to see his family instead of turning up for the match as a massive snub, but the player claims that he
was thr victim of flight delays, and only decided to go see his folks when he realised he'd become too late to get to Angola for the game.
Unfortunately, he then appeared on the bench for Arsenal's win over Man City, and could be done by FIFA under their 5 day rule.
FIFA say, "Kanu is in serious trouble. He cannot just abandon the team and go off elsewhere. Under our rules, he would be suspended from playing any games for the five days that followed his failure to turn up - and if he showed for Arsenal, it is a serious matter. Banning him is an option for us and any suspension will be for games rather than weeks."
But Kanu says it's all a misunderstanding, saying that he believe the Nigerian FA were aware of the situation throughout.
He should know better by now, it's become clear to Arseweb over the years that the Nigerian FA is very much a many-headed beast.
What we don't know yet is whether the Nigerian FA are going to
ask FIFA to act. We anticipate a number of conflicting statements from the usual selection of NFA spokesmen.
Rupe adds...
According to iAfrica.com, FIFA confirm that they have not, as yet, received
any official complaint from the NFA. And they will not ivestigate or act until they have done so.
