England have just finished their matches in the Toulon U21 international football festival in France, with spectacular lack of success. They lost all 4 matches and failed to score a goal. Jerome Thomas, John Spicer and 17 year-old Dorian Small were all in the U20 squad weakened by the absence of several key players.
Thomas started the matches against Portugal (0-3), Argentina (0-8) and Japan (0-1), while Small started against Japan and Spicer came on as sub against Argentina. We haven't yet discovered the lineup for the Turkey (0-1) game.
The England U18 team had a rather more successful time in Portugal during the first week in June, winning the 4 nation Lisbon tournament, beating Sweden (2-1) & Spain (2-0), and drawing 0-0 against Portugal. Midfielder Neil Kilkenny was in the squad and came on as sub against Sweden, the only game for which we've managed to obtain the lineup.
Meanwhile, at the end of May the England U19s qualified for the finals of the European championships, which take place from the 16th - 26th July in Lichtenstein. Right back Justin Hoyte, who made his Arsenal 1st team debut in May, played all 3 games of the final qualifying round, as England beat the Republic of Ireland (1-0), Slovenia (3-0) and Switzerland (1-0). Hoyte and David Bentley (who missed the qualifying round with a broken leg) are likely to be in the squad for the finals, injury permitting.
