Nigeria look like they might be back on track in the African Nations Cup. The started with a 1-0 loss to Morocco, then had 3 players sent home for "breach of discipline" (Chelsea's Babayaro, Pompey's Yakuba, and Schalke's Victo Agali). But today they got a
big boost with a 4-0 win over South Africa.
The first 2 goals were scored by Everton's Joseph Yobo and Bolton's Jay Jay Okocha. The latter was a 63rd minute penalty won by Kanu after chasing a long-ball into the box. He had to come off injured after that, though, and was seen with strapping on his knee later. The last 2 goals were both scored by his replacement, Osaze Odemwingie.
Nigeria's goal difference should stand them in good stead to go through now, with only Benin (the weakest team in ther group) left to play and any kind of a win likely to be enough to see them through. But whether or not the Arsenal man has any part in that or the rest of the tournament remains to be seen.
See BBC site for good coverage of the African Nations Cup. |
