Following on from the news that Edu and Gilberto went to Haiti for the "peace game" friendly, apparently against Arsenal's wishes, Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the club are not happy.
Both players were used. Arsenal are particularly annoyed that Edu played for 70 minutes, since he had been given a break by the club to play in the Copa America in May, and hasn't been seen since. Brazil selected him despite the fact that he's had just one day's training since his holiday.
"I will make a formal protest because it is just unacceptable.
Brazil have 200 players who could have played against Haiti - a match in which they were winning 6-0 after an hour! That is why I cannot accept what they did. I try to help international managers and I try to understand as much as I can. I cannot understand this case." As well as "unacceptable", Le Boss used the words "unprofessional" and "disrespectful". Strong stuff.
Gilberto had slight back problem but played for half an hour. Wenger says, "As for Gilberto playing, it is their judgement. He was genuinely injured at Everton and at half-time I wanted him to come off but he wanted to carry on.
They forced him to travel and, OK, that is the rule. They decided to play him but as it was a friendly I find it a bit surprising. But what they did with Edu was unprofessional.
I gave him a holiday after the Copa America to recover. I didn't give him a holiday because he had played for Arsenal, but for Brazil. They took him back without even telling us and with only one day's training. Can you believe that?"
He's definitely a bit pissed off. Look out for responses from Brazil which focus on the political importance of this particular friendly.
Both players are likely to be missing from Arsenal's line-up on Sunday, which could mean a first Premiership start for Mathieu Flamini, in an all-new central midfield partnership with Cesc Fabregas.
The good news is that, a busy week of international friendlies, there are no new injuries in the Arsenal squad. |
