Not a great day day for Sol Campbell. England won, so he'll probably be going to Germany for the World Cup next year (they'll be going, anyway, thanks to Holland). But his own efforts to force his way back into Arsenal and England teams suffered another set-back as he limped out of the England match.
Apparently, a scan has already confirmed a slight hamstring tear. It looked like the damage was done when Sol stretched for an interception. After a long period of treatment it was decided that he couldn't go on (and let's at least be thankful for that).
Sol's definitely out of the Poland game on Wednesday but, more's the point, likely to miss another 3 weeks or so. While we were (rightly) singing the praises of Senderos while he was keeping Sol out at the end of last season, there's no doubting that his return had a big impact recently. Maybe it's the sheer phyiscal presence of the man, and maybe the impact of that presence is more important now we've lost that of Patrick Vieira.
Anyway, seems more than likely that he'll miss trips to Sparta Prague and West Brom, and visit of Man City. The away game at Tottenham on 29th is dodgy too, and I guess it might be an unlikely game to bring a not-sure-if-he's-fit Sol straight into. As might the following game, at home to Prague.
So anyway, just as I was considering whether or not the Cygan-Toure partnership could cope with these games, and naturallly therefore trying to remember the latest news on the fitness of Philippe Senderos, I heard that the youngster scored a diving header for Switzerland against France today. Cracking stuff Phil. The goal, from a free kick, cancelled out Cisse's opener and leaves the group open for either or both teams to qualify. They're both one point behind Israel, but Israel have finished their games. But France are at home to Cyprus while Senderos goes to the Republic of Ireland. Still, strangers things have happened. Switzerland fielded more Arsenal players than France today, the latter only having a couple of former Gunners in Vieira and Sylvain Wiltord.
