Jose Antonio Reyes kept his chances of qualifying for Germany next year alive yesterday by creating both Spanish goals for Fernando Torres. But Spain's 2-0 win in Belgium will probably not be enough as Serbia and Montenegro also won, away in Lithuania. The Serbs are still 2 points clear and are at home (to Bosnia & Herzegovina) in the last match. The Bosnians might not roll over though, they're in with a sniff of a play-off place being just a point behind Spain, although they may not being feeling too optmistic about Spain's chances of dropping points away to San Marino (along with Luxembourg, the only team left with no points in the European qualifying groups).
Anyway, Jose made the goals in a 3 minute burst 10 minutes after the break. The first was a diagonal pass to split the defence and find Torres running through - a great ball but not an easy take for Torres. Then Jose's low cross from the goal-line set up a much easier finish for the second. Torres has been linked with Arsenal and is bound to attract huge bids from around Europe next summer. This kid's a bit special. At the age of 21 he's captaining both Atletico and the Spanish national team. Let's hope that Jose can put in a good word for us, they certainly seem to have a good understanding on the pitch.
Not so good for Cesc Fabregas and Spain's U21s. They lost 1-0 as Belgium clinched automatic qualification. Spain can get second place, but like the senior team they need to win in San Marino and hope that Serbia and Montenegro screw up against Bosnia-Herzegovina. |
