Matthew Upson was in the starting line up for the England Under-21 side which lost 3-1 against Poland. And by all accounts, he and his defensive colleagues had a nightmare.
The game was goalless until half time, but exploded into life following the break, with the Poles going ahead in the first minute of the second half. But Danny Mills equalised within 2 minutes, turning in a rebounded shot from close range.
England conceded a second on 57 minutes, when they failed to clear a free kick; Dawidowski, only just on as a sub, headed past Nicky Weaver. And four minutes later, it was 3-1 - Weaver decided that a wayward cross was heading safely over the crossbar; ooops.
The team had gone into the game on the verge of a new record: they could have become the first team in history to qualify from a group stage with a perfect record - all victories, and no goals conceded. Double ooops.
Peter Taylor, the man sacked by the FA to give Howard Wilkinson a day job, must be wetting himself laughing.
