 International round-up by Rupe

Oleg Luzhny captained the Ukraine in their 1-0 win in Iceland last night. The home team were captained by Arsenal old-boy Siggi Johnsen. The good news for Oleg is that this win leaves them clear on top of group 4, so a win in their last match in Russia will mean automatic qualification. The bad news is that although he had a good game at right back he was booked for kicking the ball away, and later limped off injured. See Reuters report.

France, in the same group, are level with Russia one point behind Ukraine. So they need to win their last match at home to Iceland to have a chance of first place but guarantee a finish in the top 2. See previous newsreel article on Anelka's (non) involvement. Unusually, no current Arsenal players were in the side, although perhaps that explains why France struggled to beat Armenia. Petit is, of course, injured, and Vieira's place was taken by occasional alleged Arsenal target Christian Karembeu.

Possibly the only England players to come back from the pathetic display in Poland with any credit (apart from the keeper Nigel Martyn, who didn't have that much to do) were the Arsenal pair of Tony Adams and Martin Keown, both of whom were colossal in defence. England will be looking for Freddie Ljungberg's Sweden to do them a favour against Poland in October.
