Nigeria lost at home in the final of the African Nations Cup, after a memorable final which saw Cameroon take a 2-0 lead, only for the tournament's co-hosts to take it to extra time, and on to penalties.
Kanu set up Nigeria's first goal, and it was an absolute scorcher from Jay-Jay Okocha from forty-odd yards which tied the game. In the penalty shootout, the decisive moment came when a blast from Ikpeba seemed to bounce down off the crossbar and over the line - but the ref didn't give it: perhaps influenced by Ikpeba's own reaction of dismay?
And in a distressing parallel of events at Highbury - Kanu missed his penalty, although - to be fair - the keeper was virtually on top of him by the time he struck the ball; and the winner was scored by... Liverpool's Rigobert Song. Oh the irony.
