Following the announcement that Alan Shearer is going to hang
up his England boots after Euro 2000, Teamtalk are guessing
that the real England captain is likely to join him.
They don't seem to have much evidence but it does make sense.
Tony Adams problems with injury persist, and by ending
his international days he might be able to keep going at Arsenal
a bit longer. His retirement would give England a chance to establish which of the current crop of promising young centre backs is going to make it in his place. Campbell? Woodgate?
Upson...?
Still, we'll have to wait and see if Tone even mentions it.
I've never seen the point in announcing these things in advance.
Perhaps the fact that the captaincy will be up for grabs again
will tempt him to stay for the World Cup qualfiers. Leaving so
that the youngsers have a chance for the World Cup finals is one thing, but England have a tricky qualfying competition to
negotiate first!
The way he got Arsenal going again against Southampton on
Sunday, both with his superb play and his shouting at the rest of the
team beforehand, shows that a fit Tony Adams is a priceless
asset on the pitch.
Kevin Keegan will surely be hoping that Adams keeps himself in the frame.
