Sol Campbell has spoken about the vacancy that will be created by
Alan Shearer's retirement from International football after this
summer's European tournament.
Campbell has been touted as one of the few potential rivals
to Tony Adams for the England captaincy. His youth and fitness count in his favour, and he has been given the armband against the Czechs last year (when Adams and Shearer were both injured)
and when Shearer was taken off against Argentina recently.
But Sol himself has no
doubts about who it should be.
"It's an honour to play for England, but Tony
Adams is the one who is going to be captain. It is always
the way, and players know the pecking order. It is because of what he has done in the game and because he has been captain before. Tony is the natural choice. As long as I'm playing for England and we are qualifying for tournaments, I will be happy."
Campbell's attitude does him credit, but "happy"? while still
at Tottenham? It is sad to see such small ambition in such a
promising player.
Tony has stated that he has no intention of following
Shearer's example and quitting after the summer. But sadly, if he doesn't sort out his injury problems the
decision might not need to be made. It's not impossible that
he won't play again this season, and one has to wonder whether
it would be wise for Keegan to make a player captain who might
not make many of the games.
Adams and Campbell should be going head-to-head at Highbury in
10 days time. But there's a fair chance that the
Arsenal captain won't make it.
