Thanks to Norwegian gooner Eivind Lunde for sending us the news from Sweden,
that former Highbury favourite Anders Limpar has
retired.
With 2 weeks to go before the start of the new season in Sweden, Anders told his club Djurgården that although he
still loves to train, he is no longer
motivated for match play. Plus, at 35, his "body just can't take it". Seeing as he's not being paid for training but only in win bonuses (see here), you can see
why he might think there's not much point carrying on.
Read it here in Swedish.
Limpar will be remembered at Arsenal for many things, the ones that stick out in my mind are: the casual clothesline that felled
Mark Pembridge at Highbury, being left on the bench inexplicably by George Graham, and the goal from the half-way line
against Liverpool which the media conveniently forgot about
in order to portray Beckham's effort against Wimbledon a few years later as
something unique. Anders' goal was more impressive since unlike
Beckham he
was being challenged for the ball.
Anders scored 17 goals in 96 Arsenal appearances. He was capped 58 times.
