Seaman retires from football by Rupe

David Seaman has today announced his retirement from football.

The former Arsenal stalwart left us in the summer, signing a 1-year deal with Man City. But his recurring shoulder injury has continued to be a major problem and he was subbed after 13 minutes of City's loss at Pompey on Saturday.

If you want an idea of how much of a problem his shoulder has been, check out this newsreel search!

Man City are currently in talks aimed at signing Seaman's successor with England: West Ham's David James.

In his career Seaman won 75 caps for England, and was named England player of the tournament at Euro96 for his solid performances including the penalty shoot-outs, something of a speciality (it took a string of perfect German pens to pout England out). He played for Arsenal 563 times, winning the League and Cup double twice, plus a domestic Cup double, another FA Cup, another League title, and a European Cup-Winners Cup title.

He also won "Celebrity Ready Steady Cook", beating snooker's John Virgo. He has since followed Virgo into the heady world of being the butt of people's jokes on a TV quiz show, but we hope he will now be taking up the post of goalkeeping coach which he was offered before....

See our David Seaman page for more "H" info (including the true but origin of that nickname as well as a rather clever untrue one).
