Not for the first time in its brief but illustrious history, Arseweb says 'three cheers for Mr Ian Wright'.
Following stints - with varying levels of success - at West Ham, Forest, Celtic and Telly, Arsenal's record goalscorer ended up at Burnley, with a view to helping them get promotion to Nationwide 1. And would you believe it - he's gone and (they've) done it.
A late goal from substitute Glen Little gave the Clarets the win at Scunthorpe, and with Gillingham losing at Wrexham, it put Stan Ternent's side second in the table - and up, with Preston.
To be fair, it's not as if Wrighty took them up single-handedly. He's come on as a sub in 11 of his 15 appearances. But looking back a few weeks, he scored a last-minute winner to take a crucial 3 points against Notts County - and I bet every Arsenal fan can imagine the scene at Turf Moor when that went in.
Unfortunately, Saturday's success for Burnley puts paid to the Conspiracy Theory which Arseweb heard from one or two people - that Wrighty would deliberately get them into the playoffs, but no further... just so he could play his final competitive game at Wembley. That's if he makes good on his promise to retire.
As we said months ago, it just doesn't seem right for Ian Wright's last ever game to have been at Scunthorpe. |
