Arsenal were the winners of the London heat of the British Masters indoor 'soccer six' tournament for old geezers at the Docklands Arena on Wednesday night.
Relying largely on a spine of (wait for it) Eddie McGoldrick, Paul Davis and Perry Groves - with Liam Brady doing a fine job as sweeper, the Gooners thumped Wimbledon 5-3... then fought out a very bitter 2-2 draw against our North London neighbours, which saw Spurs' Paul Miller sent off for throwing an elbow.
That put us top of the three-team group, and meant a place in the final against the other group winners, Chelsea. Arsenal went 1-0 with a lovely set piece: Paul Davis laying off a free kick for Eddie McGoldrick to blast in from the touchline - one couldn't help but recall Eddie's Goal against Standard Liege. Soon after it was 2-0, as Paul Davis scuffed one in from the edge of the penalty area.
Pat Nevin, heralded by Sky's commentary team as the man of the tournament, got Chelsea back into it with time running out. Immediately Arsenal went up the other end, and Eddie Mac won a penalty - which Davis smacked wide. Then horror of horrors, Chelsea found an equaliser in the final seconds, as Clive Walker smashed in a left-foot half-volley.
A penalty shootout loomed, but as ref Steve Lodge played a staggering amount of injury time, Steve Williams blasted home from close range to restore the Arsenal lead. The hooter went - and the Gooners now go forward to the national finals in Nottingham, in early October.
No sign of Ian Wright on the night, contrary to earlier publicity... but you wouldn't bet against him showing up for the Big Final, would you?? |
