Kanu returned from Nigeria today. According to reports
(eg Soccernet) Arsenal had always been expecting him back at the start of this week.
But tonight's Evening Standard reckons that this doesn;t count as the start of the week, and claims that Arsène Wenger was furious with him for
being away so long (see their This Is London site). They even reckon Wenger is in the mood
to fine him the maximum 2 week's wages.
The report says that
while Arsenal agreed to let him stay a while after the Nations Cup final, there was never a date set for his return. So it
seems it'd be rather unreasonable to chastise the man for
staying too long. Especially if the story that Kanu's mother
was sick (or has he been seeing the same skiving consultant as David Beckham?). Maybe it's just the press trying to stir things up.
Kanu has a poor travel record of late. It's been reported recently that after the rigmarole of Kanu pleading with Nigeria to let him to stay an extra day to take part in our
FA Cup tie against Leicester, and their eventual agreement,
the player then took 4 days to get there! No wonder they
weren't keen for him to leave England any later than necessary. Ah well, we always said his pace was deceptive. So long as he gets
to Highbury on time this Saturday...
