Vieira's sending off: like someone died by Simon
on 21/8/00 at 22:56
this is story 233 of 595 in this topic to date

Others will describe, in more and better detail, the events of the match (a 2-0 win, goals from Lauren - or Adams, and Henry - see Sky Sports for more). But arguably, the post-match interviews deserve a Newsreel item of their own.

Thierry Henry, named by Trevor Francis as 'man of the match', was first before the Sky cameras. And it was as if someone had died out there. Sky's Clare Tomlinson, formerly press officer at Highbury of course, tried to get him to talk about his great performance in the game. But all Thierry would talk about was Patrick Vieira's sending-off - a second red card in two games. Judging by his expression and tone of voice, you'd be forgiven for thinking we'd been hammered.

A few minutes later, Arsene Wenger spoke 'down the line' to Andy Gray and Richard Keys in the Sky studio - and refused to divulge Vieira's comments as he left the field. He also refused to comment in detail on the incidents, for fear of being accused of 'whinging'. But as Andy Gray rightly said afterwards, there was a real feeling that Vieira's not happy with his treatment in English football.

The first yellow card, for (attempted!) remonstration at a foul by Jamie Carragher, was a little harsh. And the second was a perfectly fair challenge. He aimed for the ball, he got the ball. No way could he have made contact with Didi Hamann, even if he'd tried. Sadly the same can't be said for Hamann, who seemed to be going studs-up at Vieira's thigh.

Impartiality isn't really part of the Arseweb philosophy, but for what it's worth - none of the three sendings-off was truly justifiable. And it's all the more ironic, given Graham Poll's jovial pre-match interview with Sky. Let's hope it's the football which makes the headlines, not the refereeing, they concluded - ha, fat chance.

Look, it's as simple as this. Patrick Vieira is one of the best midfielders in the country, his only weakness being his temperament - and it should not be a permissible tactic to use this to try and get him sent off. Nor should referees be going into games, expecting to have to send off certain players. Which is it? And if you were Paddy, would you put up with it, week in and week out? No, why should you! We lost Petit this way - please God, don't let it happen again.

That was a great result out there. Our first win against Liverpool in 15 attempts, and the Premiership campaign is back on track. But you'll be hard pressed to find that in the back page headlines on tomorrow's papers.
