In the latest diary instalment on Dennis Bergkamp's official website, there are some unusually outspoken comments on his
contract extension discussions with Arsenal.
Seems that things aren't moving quickly enough for the Dutch master. He's been waiting for 3 weeks to hear back from the club
and goes so far as to say that it shows "a total lack of respect for me".
Hmmm.
Seems to us that 3 weeks isn't that long. Not when Dennis himself appears to have stalled things for the last 18 months or more
(see this newsreel piece),
and not when it's a 3 weeks in which the club have presumably been more concerned with seeing off the FA's interest in Wenger.
Dennis is still a great player, and one who we hope will grace the Arsenal shirt for a few more years to come. But he has to
realise that he's no longer indispensable. In fact, of the 4 main strikers at Arsenal at the moment, which one do you think Wenger would get rid of, if forced to pick? That's no criticism of the great man, but you only have to look at their ages...
One has to wonder if these official websites are such a great idea. It's great to have access to player's private thoughts,
and to be able to read stuff like this with confidence that it's
really coming from Dennis himself. But there are dangers. Those of us who've been using the internet for a while know only too well the damage that can be done by hastily worded heat-of-the-moment emails, and you'd hope that those who
ghost-write the web articles advise with the player's interests in mind. But isn't it possible that they're more interested in
a good story?
Our advice to Dennis would be: never publish anything on your website without printing it out first,
reading it several times, and then sleeping on it.
We only hope that this doesn't undermine the contract talks. He's right about one thing: Arsenal fans, like Dennis, will be hoping he stays at Arsenal.
