The latest comments from Arsene Wenger on the Arsenal vs England managerial situation cut both ways.
First, he reiterates that he is not currently interested in the England job. He is contracted to Arsenal for another 2 years and has no intention of breaking that contract, so they should remove him from their shortlist and get on with looking for someone who wants the post.
Interesting that one embellishment he now gives is that when players sign, they ask him how long he's going to stay at Arsenal. So for him to stay for less than that would not only be unfair on the club and fans, but also unfair on the players he's signed. So does that mean we can expect an exodus when Wenger does eventually leave?
Probably, because by then the players will probably be able to leave whenever they like, what with the impending dismantling of the transfer system.
And that's where Arsene's comments cut the other way. He's been reported as saying that "if things go like they say they are going to, there is no way I would be in this job any more.
International football will suddenly become very attractive".
As always, it's a clever point. If players can move between
clubs practically at will, things will turn round completely.
International managers would still not have their players
for long periods of time, but at least it'd be the same players from one time to the next!
