As expected, Patrick Vieira's return to Arsenal training fills up most of the sports pages in the English tabloids today. The Sun and The Mirror continue to have their own respective takes on the story. 'It was the biggest climbdown in football,' writes the Mirror, but their angle is that Vieira is forgiven and agent Marc Roger blamed. "Patrick is an impulsive boy. When he wants something he is really completely into it," manager Arsène Wenger is quoted as saying. Under the Mirror headline 'Sitting pretty', Wenger insists that peace has broken out between Arsenal and Vieira. The Sun, on the other hand, are convinced that Vieira's unrest, which they so faithfully have reported the last weeks, is still there. In the eyes of their reporter, Arsène Wenger 'looked downbeat' when leaving training, and they highlight the fact that Vieira himself escaped reporters by leaving through the training centre's back entrance. "The situation remains exactly the same and Patrick does not want to discuss it," Wenger is quoted as saying, but the Sun fails to pinpoint whether the manager talks about his own earlier statement about the imagination of the Sun, or the quotes attributed to Vieira or agent Roger. But even The Sun can't misinterpret the good mood on the Arsenal training ground.
According to the Times, Vieira's own good spirits may well stem from the mother of all pay rises, from GBP 30,000 to GBP 55,000 p/w.
