In an interview with L'Equipe, Patrick Vieira has given the
clearest rebuttal yet of the daft things he's supposed to have said over the summer. He says he didn't say the things attributed to him by the Sun.
"I don't know who it was but I can tell you I am trying to find out ... at the time of the interview I was on holiday in Miami and obviously I had never spoken to a journalist from The Sun.
Afterwards, the absurd remarks attributed to me gained credibility because they were picked up by agencies, newspapers and Internet sites."
Patrick also spoke of his feelings for Arsenal.
"If one day I decide I want to leave Arsenal, I will do it as a gentleman. I love Arsenal, I truly love this club.
I couldn't see myself leaving under a cloud. If I went it would be with my head held high and with agreement on all sides."
He also denied suggestions that he'd been critical of Wenger's
summer spending. Quite the opposite in fact, he describes
the buys as "clever" and says, "[Wenger] knows full well that I would never permit myself to criticise him, let alone my team mates."
See Dailysoccer for AFP report. We hope to
have our own translation before long.
Maybe we're being manipulated again. But as one of those internet
sites which covered the Sun's allegations in the summer
(without, we hope, adding to their credibility in any way)
it's only right that Paddy's rebuttal gets covered too.
And at the end of the day, if he continues to say the right things off the pitch, he could be back on track as Arsenal's next captain.
