Dennis Bergkamp has wasted little time to refute recent
rumours that he is unhappy at Arsenal.
The stories came from his agent Rob Jansen, who said that
Dennis didn't understand why... blah blah blah.. you know the rest - usual story of player not liking being left on the bench,
not understanding the manager's attitude, etc.
Anyway, on his website
Dennis states quite explicitly that he is "perfectly happy at Highbury and there is no problem" between Le Boss and the player.
He goes on to try to explain how things like this can happen. Dennis says that when it comes to contract or transfer matters,
he personally would only ever deal with the manager. And as far as
that interaction is concerned he's 100% clear about his immediate future with the club. But Jansen may have different ideas from talking to other people.
To be frank it's a little baffling. What's Jansen doing saying those kind of things without the player's approval? But Dennis appears to be trying to defend his agent from the slagging that
people like us might otherwise dish out. If that's what Dennis wants then that's fine by me.
What matters is that, as Dennis has always said, he's happy at Arsenal. His latest diary ends: "I want to make it quite clear that I love playing at Arsenal and have no intention of quitting, whatever you hear or read." (except if you ever read it on icons.com, presumably!)
Bergkamp also gives an update on his ankle injury. Although it's
getting better every day, it seems unlikely that he'll be risked against Southampton.
More likely that he'll be rested for the crucial Panathinaikos game on
Tuesday. The one thing that rang true about the Jansen stories
was the suggestion that Dennis could have been used more this season. When he has been used it's been to very good effect. While we have 5 top strikers at the club, Dennis is unique. Playing counter-attacking football with Henry and Wiltord is all very well against teams that are prepared to come out and attack us, but all too often the opposition prove themselves wise to this and don't give us that space behind their
defence that we need to use this tactic to greatest effect. When it comes to breaking down stubborn defences, I'm sure I'm not the only one that hopes we start seeing more of the other 3.
If fit, I'd be hoping for Bergkamp and Jeffers tomorrow. But sadly Jeffers is also doubtful after pulling out of the England U21 game. But any of our strikers should be enough at Southampton, so long as the midfield play to their abilities.
The same may not be true against Panathinaikos.... a game we absolutely need to win.
