Arsenal have confirmed that they are to appeal
over the red card shown to Dennis Bergkamp in the
Liverpool match on Sunday.
The basis of the appeal would appear to be that
Dennis didn't catch Carragher with his challenge.
But that isn't usually seen as a good defence so
we're not optimistic.
There's some confusion over the Keown red card.
Most sources appear to agree that there can be no
appeal over professional fouls, so Arsenal will not be lodging one. But Arsenal World quote
Wenger as saying that there would be an appeal, on the basis that it was not clear that Owen would get to the ball before
Richard Wright.... a defence which, if it's even made, looks more bound to fail
than Dennis's.
Graeme Souness, manager of tomorrow's opponent's Blackburn Rovers, has said today that Arsenal are not a dirty team. Quite right too. See Ananova
Arsene Wenger meanwhile is quoted as saying that the small pitch at Highbury is partly to blame for our red card tally this season (see Football BC).
Rupe adds...
Well done Arsenal World! Although Arsenal cannot exactly
appeal against it under FA regulations, Arsenal.com confirm that Arsenal are asking ref Mike Riley to review
the Keown red card too. The defence...? They quote Wenger as saying Michael Owen only had "a probable scoring chance and
not a certain one".
