Dennis Bergkamp has been charged with violent conduct following the FA's consideration of the TV coverage of his clash with
Nils-Eric Johansson during the defeat by Blackburn 2 weeks ago.
There has been much wailing and gnashing of teeth by Arsenal fans over this incident, the claim being that it indicates double standards by the FA. I'm not so sure.
The ref Graham Barber did award a free-kick against Bergkamp at the time, and told him to calm down, and has been reported as saying that he dealt with the incident. But it transpires that he now admits that he did not see the alleged stamping action by Dennis, and so the FA are quote within their rights (as granted by themselves) to bring the charge. Bergkamp may well face a 3 match ban.
We very much hope that justice is served and Dennis is cleared,
because there really didn't seem to be much in it. But it has to be said that even if he didn't stamp on the guy or intend to
harm him in any way, he brought the charge on himself by raising his foot like that. Whatever Wenger may say, it's not totally out of character for Dennis to react in a tetchy way like this.
Cut it out, Dennis! We've got lots of great midfielders these days, but still none that can do what you can do (like, take a decent free-kick).
