The contract negotiations with Dennis Bergkamp aren't going all that well for Arsenal, if media reports are to be believed. Bergkamp's agent, Rob Jansen, has called Arsenal's latest offer 'embarrassing' and the Dutch star has remained in Holland after his last contract expired on July 1. Some reports suggest he's negotiating a return to Ajax, others quote him saying that he'll rather retire than play for another club. Among Jansen's main rants (and his job is to rant on behalf of Dennis) is the fact that Arsenal have failed to make any offer until the last few weeks. The offer that finally came, ominously coincided with the club facing defeat in the fight for Harry Kewell's signature. We believe Kewell, now Liverpool's new no. 7, was Arsenal's main transfer target this close season - alongside Philippe Mexes and a new goalkeeper. Noone would be surprised if he not only took over the Dutch master's place in the team, but also his no. 10 shirt. When the Australian chose Anfield instead, and perhaps surprisingly gave up the chance of Champions League football in the near future, Arsenal will have to think again. That's why there may be room for Dennis next season anyway. The rants of Jansen (whose job etc.) can still be interpreted as a louder form of wage negotiations. Dennis is prepared to cut his salary at 34, the question is likely: how much?
