Some updates on some of our young players off on loan spells....
Moritz Volz played the whole of Fulham's first match this season, a 3-2 home win over our opponents this weekend, Middlesbrough. He had a solid game, perhaps better going forward than defensively (we hear), a crucial late clearance notwithstanding. Fulham's official website has this interview with Volz, ahead of tomorrow's match away to Everton.
A curious coincidence that, Volz's first 2 games for the Cottagers being against Arsenal's first 2 opponents this season. Meanwhile tomorrow, Jermaine Pennant is expected to turn out for Leeds for the first time, away to Tottenham. Despite only being on loan for 2 months, Pennant has been given the number 11 shirt by Peter Reid (perhaps in an attempt to tempt him to stay longer).
Whether he starts at White Hart Lane or not is hard to predict. Reid says, "It will be a tough one for him - I don't think they will welcome him with open arms at White Hart Lane. I am not saying I am going to change the side, and Jason Wilcox did a great job on the right defensively against Newcastle. But Pennant has got the ability to go past people and should give us better balance." Pennant apparently suffered a slight knock on England U21 duty on Tuesday (not as big a knock as the guy he lamped). "He hurt his hand", joked Reid, before adding that the actual injury was to his thigh. Reid seems not to be keen on Danny Mills, incidentally, and the full-back is expected to go on loan himself, to Boro or Birmingham.
A few people are still confused about the rule change regarding loans between Premiership clubs, and who can blame them? Could we loan a few players to another club for a weekend just to help them beat Man Utd, for example? Well, it seems that there are some limits. The loans can only be made within transfer windows, a club can only have 2 loan players from Prem teams at any one time, and a maximum of 4 in total per season. This is similar to a system which is said to work fine in Italy.
Sebastian Svard, on loan to FC Copenhagen, played the second half for Denmark U21s against Finland during the week. Hasse Palmelund writes, "He was man-of-match
even though he only played the second half. He partnered with
FC teammate Hjalte Nørregaard in central midfield and they
were very dominant of the game." Also, "he made his debut for FC last weekend playing a decent game in central
midfield,
could be better, but he needs more time to settle with his new teammates.
He wears no. 22. "
While we're talking loans, the official Beveren site has this article featuring last season's loanees Stack and Halls.
