Thierry Henry is France's Jonny Wilkinson for 2003, having won the French national Sports Personality of the Year award, organised by the country's biggest paper Ouest-France.
Tennis player Amelie Maursemo was second, and the gold medal winning womens' 4x100 relay team was 3rd. Beaten down to 4th was Spurs player Tony Parker. That's San Antonio Spurs, with whom Parker became the first Frenchman to win the NBA (Basketball). Fellow Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, who won the FIFA world player of the year award ahead of Thierry, was unplaced (As far as I'm aware, that is. I only have second-hand reports so far which only go down to 4th. Looks like you have to pay to access the Ouest-France site???)
I've been assuming that Henry isn't too bothered about meaningless awards. But if he is, hopefully winning this one will help make up for coming second in the last 2....
Rupe adds... As French Sportsman of the year who is also a footballer, Henry failed to defy logic by going on to also be named French footballer of the year, an award voted for by France Football journalists and former winners. He got 162 points, 33 ahead of Zinedine Zidane in second. |
