Sol Campbell is expected to be back in action again, at last, in
tonight's reserve team match against Coventry at Barnet's Underhill stadium.
Sol hasn't played since Euro 2004, when England's medical staff failed to diagnose an achilles problem. His last significant contribution was the disallowed goal at the end of England's loss to Portugal.
We've been doing pretty well without him, but looked a bit nervy towards the end of the PSV match and then the physical presence of Les Ferdinand, coming off the bench for Bolton, looked a bit much for Cygan. So it'll be very good to have Campbell back.
He's been back in training for a couple of weeks now, but the run we'd been on allowed Wenger to take things slower than he might have done.
Wenger says, "Of course you need Sol when he's fit again but I think it [the Bolton match] was a team problem not an individual one. I don't know when he'll be ready but it would be stupid to rush Sol back."
Not rushing him back is fine, but if there are no negative reactions to tonight's game it would not be a surprise to see Sol start the game at Man City next weekend. |
